Laminate, yes or no?

If you're looking for 4x4 decals that last, laminate is your friend: it adds UV resistance, resists branch scratches, and improves post-ride clean-up.

At Star Sam, we manufacture off-road stickers using ORACAL 3651 polymeric vinyl with 3M adhesive and ORAGUARD 210 laminate. They resist sun, rain, and scratches without fading, with a durability of 5–7 years in off-road use.

In addition, they're printed with Roland TrueVis eco-solvent inks for a sharp and durable finish. All this will ensure your vehicle can withstand mud and hoses without fading.

Colours and Visibility

Off-road, there's dust, shadows, and reflections. Whites and yellows contrast sharply against dark bodies; on light-coloured vehicles, matte black or red stand out more.

For 4x4 truck sides and decals, it's best to choose 25–30 cm long for logos, and 50–70 cm for door stripes or text.

Tips for logos, numbers, and stripes (hood, sides, tailgate)

• Hood: Allowances of 0.5–1 cm per side to cover ribs.
• Side stripes: Respect the lines of the door and handles; long 4x4 decals look better if they "breathe" 2–3 cm from the bottom edge.
• Tailgate: Centre with hinge tape; if the embossing is deep, use cast vinyl and heat.

5-Step Installation Without Drama

• Cleaning: Degrease with isopropyl; dry with a lint-free cloth. No wax the day before.
• Presentation and reference: Make marks with masking tape. For large 4x4 truck decals, work in halves.
• Dry vs. wet application:
  • Dry: better initial adhesion, little room for correction.
  • Wet (water + 1 drop of spray soap): longer to reposition; dry thoroughly with a spatula.

Ideally, use wet for large pieces and dry for small text.

• Curves, hinges, and heat: For edges and reliefs, use gentle heat (a hairdryer) and apply pressure with a cloth. Cast vinyl fits like a glove.
• Retouching and curing: Retouch edges after 24 hours. Avoid washing for 48–72 hours. Plus, with Star Sam 4x4 decals, you won't experience discolouration for a long time.

What is the difference between laminated and unlaminated 4x4 vinyl?

Laminating adds a "clear layer" that protects against UV rays, scratches, and chemicals. Without laminate, 4x4 decals can fade or become scratched more quickly. With properly applied laminate, the lifespan typically extends from 2–4 to 5–7 years.

How do I apply 4x4 decals to curved or raised surfaces?

Gently heat with a hairdryer (with constant motion), stretch just enough, and press down with a cloth/felt squeegee. Work in small areas, making relief cuts in the backing paper if necessary. Cast vinyl is best suited for hoods, fenders, and bumpers.

Can I wash with a pressure washer/Karcher after installation?

Yes, but wait 48–72 hours. When washing, maintain a distance (≥50 cm), use an oblique spray, and avoid direct contact with the edges. This way, your 4x4 decals won't raise any edges.

How do I remove a 4x4 decal without damaging the paint?

Apply moderate heat, pull the decal at a low, steady angle, and then apply a thin layer of water. Remove residue with a special remover or isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth. On glass, use a plastic-edged scraper to avoid scratching.

Can they be approved, or will they affect the vehicle inspection/insurance requirements?

Decorative bodywork designs that don't cover lights, licence plates, or other visual areas pose no problems. Avoid covering reflective areas or vehicle approvals. If in doubt, check local regulations or your vehicle inspection station.
